Another important element when designing is communication.  Debby believes her job is to produce the garden her clients want as they are the people who are going to enjoy it.  So at every stage she meets the client in person to ensure the design is going according to the client’s wishes.

Her design experience ranges from installing large ponds, transforming a neglected wood into a tranquil oasis, creating organic vegetable plots, child friendly gardens, front gardens, through to  gardens to attract butterflies, heather gardens, wildlife friendly gardens and concept coastal gardens.

Over the years as well as designing residential gardens Debby has also taught evening classes in garden design at Brockenhurst College, worked out of Fairweathers Garden Centre in Beaulieu and in 2008 she collaborated with local photographer Bev Saunders to produce an exhibition at the Forest Arts Centre in New Milton.  She also writes articles for Lymington.com, and helps with the walled garden at Priestlands School in Lymington.

Initial consultation
Debby’s initial visit to a garden is free.  This provides an opportunity for her to meet the client, look at the garden, get an initial idea of the client’s wants, and for the client to see her portfolio.  During the visit Debby also assesses the work involved and provides an estimate for producing a design.

Scaled plan
Work begins with Debby measuring and assessing the site, and talking in depth with the clients to establish their wants and needs for the garden.  Based upon this information initial scaled, hand drawn, draft plans are produced.  At this stage further discussions with the clients are held so comments and amendments can be made to the plan – a much cheaper option than trying to make changes at a later stage.  The scaled final plans are again hand drawn and rendered in water colours.

Visual aid
To help the client visualise how the garden will look, Debby can produce perspective drawings, elevations and axonometric drawings.  The latter gives a bird’s eye view of the garden.  Again all these pictures are scaled and hand drawn.
